HIS Excellency the Governor of Victoria, Dr David De Kretser, opened the Whittlesea Show on Saturday accompanied by an Official Party that included the Mayor, Members of the Victorian Parliament, local dignitaries and representatives of the Whittlesea Agricultural Society.

The Official Opening was preceded by a Grand Parade through the streets of the township, acclaimed by an assembled multitude of eager spectators who followed the parade to the Showgrounds.
At the Showgrounds, numerous exhibits and displays were ranged around the main arena, much to the wonderment and delight of countless local residents and visitors alike.
The wide range of agricultural and horticultural produce on display bore mute but colourful testimony to the fecundity of the surrounding district and represented a fitting testimony to the untiring labours of our horny-handed sons of the soil.
Cattle, horses, sheep and goats were all on display, representing some of the best that the district has to offer, with the impressive size of the champion bovine quadrupeds drawing gasps of admiration from appreciative spectators.
Much wonderment was occasioned by the display of the very latest agricultural machinery, representing man's ingenuity in harnessing the power of steam as well as oils and other explosive substances to power mechanical contrivances that will doubtless, in years to come, ease the burden of manual labour upon those who so diligently work the land.
Hawkers and vendors of small goods perambulated the Showgrounds crying their wares, and numerous stalls offered a veritable cornucopia of refreshments to the weary and the thirsty.
An ample variety of entertainments were provided for the juvenile members of society, with a selection of swings and roundabouts that elicited cries of joy from those who partook of their uncertain delights.
An education section displayed the handiwork of local scholars, adequately demonstrating that Whittlesea's schoolchildren have mastered the intricacies of the essential three Rs, while displays of a variety of arts and crafts proved that the cultural aspects of local society are in a flourishing state.
The sheer number and amazing variety of the many items on display were a more than adequate demonstration of the entire district's potential for a happy and prosperous future, and the Whittlesea Agricultural Society is to be congratulated on its skill in organising such a fitting tribute to the fertility of the local region.
