KYLIE Collier still counts her lucky stars when she thinks back to the events of Black Saturday.
The former Wandong resident, her husband Mark and their three children, Zane, (13), Reid (10) and Max (3), would usually have been at home that fateful Saturday, but with the hot weather predicted they decided to go away for the weekend to the coastal town of Rye.
However, Kylie’s father Ray, who also lived on their sprawling Wandong property, stayed home.
She said she and Mark had decided to take the kids to the beach to ride the family's jet ski when she noticed a sudden wind change.
"It was bizarre," she recalled.
"The wind just picked up and Mark had to take the jet ski out of the water.
"After he did that he went back up to the place we were staying and saw that my Dad had been trying to call my mobile.
"Mark called him back and he told him there was a fire not too far away."
Kylie said at first her husband and herself were not too fazed by news that there was a fire back home.
"We’d had close calls before," Mark said.
"We just told him to keep an eye on it and if it got dangerous the CFA would come up."
But with the erratic wind changes and soaring heat, no one could have predicted what the fire would do next.
Concerned, Mark called neighbours and friends and was initially told that everything seemed OK.
"He (Ray) called again and said the fire had got closer.
‘I just said to him ‘get out of there, just go, just take Kylie’s car and go," he said.
The family had taken Mark’s car to the beach, leaving Kylie’s behind.
"My car always had the keys in the ignition," said Kylie.
"But this time they weren’t there."
Seconds later, a panicked Ray called back saying he couldn’t find the keys to the car.
"He said ‘the front paddock's on fire’ and that he couldn’t see anything," Mark said.
"It was pretty scary, I just told him to get in my van and leave."
Ray made it to the van, taking with him any of the children's pets that he could find.
By that stage the detached rumpus room was on fire.
"He got the dogs in but two of them ran off," Mark said.
With fire bearing down around him and time running out Ray quickly drove out of the property in a haze of smoke, escaping to his youngest daughter's home in South Morang.
"We’ve been told he escaped by about three minutes," Kylie said
"For a little while no one could tell us where he was, I was like ‘where’s my Dad’,"
The Colliers say they were relieved when they were told Ray was safe.
"We lost everything in the house, nothing could be salvaged but we still had all of us," Kylie said.
"We were lucky that our kids didn’t have to actually see it as it was happening," she said.
Shortly after the fire the family returned to the area, setting up house in Wallan in temporary accommodation at the Wallan Egg Farm.
The Colliers praised the work of local CFA members and volunteer organisations that assisted in the recovery efforts after Black Saturday.
They have since purchased an established home in Hidden Valley while Ray has returned to the Wandong property, living in a mobile home.
The family said they would one day like to return to their Wandong property.
