SHE has been hailed as a local hero, the friendly face who came to the aid of so many in a time of uncertainty and complete devastation, but ask Heather Knight how she feels about her new title and she’ll tell you she was just doing what comes naturally.
Like so many, Heather Knight recalls the events of Black Saturday as if it was yesterday.
The smoke, the flames and the fear as fire took hold across the Mitchell and Murrindindi shires – all are memories of a time not so long.
The lives of so many changed that day.
With more than 170 people dead and thousands left homeless many people were in a state of shock.
As the full extent of the tragedy started to set in the gentle mother of four from Broadford began working on a plan to help her community and somehow make some good out of something so tragic.
"It was a physical need," she said.
"Everyone wanted to help."
The day following the fires Heather travelled to the Bushfire Relief Centre set up in Wallan to offer assistance.
There, she gathered orders for basic essentials including batteries and toiletries
"I remember the first thing I went and bought was batteries," she recalled.
Within three days local business owners began donating to a charity auction to raise funds and soon enough cash donations began to flood in.
With no one to receipt the cash and no official fund set up Heather contacted Mitchell Community Health and established the Mitchell-Murrindindi Bushfire Relief Fund.
A massive $190,000 in donations was received, which continues to be used to assist fire-affected locals in getting back on their feet.
Heather later began visiting burnt out areas across both shires to meet with those who lost their homes and offer assistance.
The dedicated volunteer takes orders for much needed items weekly and delivers them.
She said she feels lucky that she has been able to contribute to the community.
"I’ve been lucky that I have the time and I have the support of my husband and my family," she said.
Heather also founded a ladies' morning tea each Thursday morning in Kilmore for women affected by the bushfires, which she says, has bought some ‘amazing’ people into her life.
With a big smile she describes the bond the women have forged over the past 12 months.
"It’s just the most amazing feeling.
"These were all women that had never met before and they’ve just become the best of friends and such a support for each other," she said.
She said the tone at the meetings has changed in recent months, with many excited about rebuilding their homes and looking to the future.
"There’s less crying now and a lot more laughing," she said.
Heather said she was honoured to be awarded the Mitchell Shire Council Local Hero Award on Australia Day but felt the greatest reward she had received was the new friendships she had made.
"When someone just puts their arms around you and just says thanks … it’s just the best," she said.
Heather will join Channel Nine in the making of a feature story this week to commemorate Black Saturday.
The program will be aired this Sunday.
