FOLLOWING a backlash this week from angry Clonbinane area residents, the Department of Sustainability and Environment has put plans for a new trail bike visitor area in Mt Disappointment "on hold" pending discussions with irate residents.
The department was about to begin work on a new toilet block, shelter shed and large car park for 29 cars and trailers on Leviathan Track, off Spur Road, in the heart of the area ravaged by the Black Saturday bushfires.
The DSE plans - and failure to communicate with residents -- have directly led to the formation of the Clonbinane Mountain Residents' Action Group.
Spur Road resident and group convenor, Trevor Vienét, said the trail bike development is "a kick in the guts" for the people of Clonbinane and Reedy Creek who are trying to put their lives together and rebuild their future in the wake of the bushfires.
The action group wants the trail bike facility moved elsewhere into the forest.
District parliamentarian, Ben Hardman, was sympathetic to the residents' concerns early this week.
He was writing to Environment Minister Gavin Jennings, to try to ensure that further consultation takes place and the project does not go ahead at this stage.
Mr Hardman wants to make sure DSE takes into account the changed circumstances residents are facing as a result of the fires.
