GARDENERS across the City of Whittlesea are invited to enter the municipality’s Annual Garden Competition which offers $2,100 in prizes.
A team of judges will inspect the entrants’ gardens and award prizes worth up to $500 in each category: Best Front Garden and Best Edible Garden.
Entries for the Best Edible Garden Award will be judged on the amount and quality of the fruit/vegetables and the type of fruit/vegetables produced, with special recognition given to uncommon and self-cultivated varieties.
Entries for Best Front Garden will be judged on the environmental aspects of gardening with emphasis on the use of native and drought tolerant plants, the use of grey water, rain water tanks, the use of mulch and other environmental initiatives used in the front garden.
The use of environmentally friendly garden practices such as the use of grey water or rain water tanks will be viewed favourably.
Last year’s Best Front Garden winner, South Morang resident Peter Edmunds, was a stand-out with Australian drought-tolerant natives and dry creek bed/desert-themed garden.
Mr Edmunds said he started the garden make-over in 2008.
“There were originally 44 rose plants but they required too much maintenance and too much water,” Mr Edmunds said.
With some advice from a local nursery, Mr Edmunds transformed his front yard with native Australian grasses, wattles and other plants in around two months.
“I haven’t put any water on it in 12 months and it’s all nicely established.
“I hope more people will get involved and do something similar. If more people use Australian plants in their gardens water use will be reduced and that’s probably a good aim,” he said.
Due to competition regulations Mr Edmunds won’t be able to enter the competition again for another three years but he said he looks forward re-establishing his garden.
“I’ll put in a few more plants and with a bit of luck I’ll have another go at [entering]. It should be even better by then,” he said.
The competition is open to all residents in the City of Whittlesea. Entries close January 29.
