THE historic Methodist church in Bourke Street, Kilmore, may soon house an art gallery if a current planning permit application is approved.
Kilmore residents Bill and Caroline Lodwick, who purchased the 1860 gothic-style church and adjoining hall in December last year, have applied to council for approval of use of the church as an art gallery.
They are also seeking to use the 55-year-old hall as the location of Ms Lodwick’s boutique publishing business, National Biographic, which attracts business from throughout Australia and overseas, and is currently located in the Hey Day Arcade in Sydney Street.
The Lodwicks are keen to reopen the church to the public, and give tourists and local residents the chance to enjoy and appreciate the historic building.
Ms Lodwick, an executive member of the Kilmore Chamber of Commerce, said she would like to see the church building used as a community asset and, if approved, the space will be rented out to district artists to exhibit their work.
She pointed out that the buildings were formerly used as places of assembly by the Masons and were utilised by community groups such as dance schools.
She said the church provides an ideal space for art exhibitions.
“It would be a wonderful opportunity for Kilmore and for the community to be able to use one of these old buildings and appreciate its heritage value,” she said.
“It’s also an opportunity for local artists to have a place for their own exhibitions.”
The Lodwicks have consulted Mitchell Shire Council’s heritage advisor, Willys Keeble, and said they have committed to working with her to ensure the heritage integrity of the buildings is maintained (there is a heritage overlay that applies to the exterior of both buildings).In a letter to council’s planning department, Ms Lodwick said the building would be used in “functional and sensitive manner,” and that Ms Keeble suggested the use of the church building by community artists would be a benefit to the community and allow the public to enjoy Kilmore’s heritage.
