EIGHT Victorian firefighters help make up at team of 30 firefighters from across Australia and New Zealand who left for Canada last week to help fight the forest fires burning in British Columbia.
A total of 22 firefighters from Australia and eight from New Zealand arrived in Canada on Thursday and are expected to remain in the Whistler region for six weeks.
The deployment to Canada was organised through the Forest Fire Management Group (FFMG), which is a sub-committee of a Federal parliamentary Ministerial Council.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the fire authorities in British Columbia are fighting more than 500 fires and have sought urgent help from Australia and New Zealand.
The fires began much like on Black Saturday, record-breaking temperatures last week of up to 40 degrees celsius rendered much of British Columbia's forest woods tinder-dry.Officials say new blazes are starting daily, caused mostly by lightning strikes, but with some suspected to be arson.
There have been no deaths or injuries so far due to the blazes and only three homes have been destroyed so far.
Thousands of residents have been evacuated from their homes as a result of the fires.
"During February’s Black Saturday bushfires Victoria received significant support from overseas firefighters, particularly from the United States, Canada and New Zealand," Mr Jennings said.
"Victoria’s emergency response benefited from having access to additional staff during the fire season and in particular our firefighters gained new skills and knowledge from working with these experienced overseas fire crews."
Mr Jennings said the firefighters sent to Canada would be specific operations staff including incident controllers and incident teams, operations chiefs and fireline supervisors, fire behaviour analysts and information officers.
"The Canadian wildfires are burning in tall forest in steep and remote locations and we will only be sending fireline staff that have extensive experience with these conditions and can manage fires in such difficult situations," Mr Jennings said.
FFMG Chairperson Ewan Waller said Victoria has amassed a wealth of forest firefighting skills over many decades and has expertise that is in high demand.
Mr Waller stressed that the safety of the firefighters was of paramount concern, as was the need for them to return to Victoria in time to continue with preparation for the bushfire season back home.
"We need to ensure that the deployment will not compromise Victoria’s preparation for the fire season. It is essential that any deployment be done safely and with the firefighters back in time to continue with preparations and be well-rested for our summer," he said.
The integrated Emergency Coordination Centre in East Melbourne will track the firefighters’ movements and maintain contact with their families while they’re away.
