LOCAL rock band, Iotah, has shot to fame after impressing judges in the renowned nation-wide search for young talent, Triple J Unearthed.
The Darraweit Guim band comprises the four talented Findlay sisters - lead vocalist and drummer Amy, 20, guitarist Hannah, 17, keyboardist Sarah, 16, and base guitarist Holly, 12.
The girls represented Gisborne Secondary College in the competition and surpassed all personal expectations when they were announced as winners from six finalists and 600 competing bands.
“I was in shock,” Amy said.
“We were sitting in the lounge listening to the radio [last Friday morning] and the phone rang.
“It didn’t even cross my mind that we’d get into the finals.”
Iotah was up against techno band Blud, Indie group Aurora and Daisy, The Glass Towers, Harry Heart Chrysalis and The Living Eyes.
Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill said the girls made a lasting impression on judges with their song, Foreign Lover, which was inspired by a trip to the USA.
“Their song was a stand-out in a year of some great entrants,” he said.
“They’ve got a depth to their sound which makes us all excited about what lies ahead for the sisters.”
The girls collaborate with their music writing abilities and already have a selection of original songs that they regularly play at gigs.
“We write everything together and sometimes sculpture from one person’s idea,” Amy said.
“Our style is inspired by mum and dad. It’s a fun style to play together and it was the most natural to us.”
“We have our little tiffs but most of the time we work well together,” Hannah said.
Five years ago
Growing up on their rural residential property listening to Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa and Jimmy Hendrix, the sisters picked up their first instruments in 2006 and after a month formed the band now known as Iotah.
Approaching their fifth year performing together as a band, the sisters have shared success at many local competitions, including the Mitchell Battle of the Bands and Macedon Ranges Battle of the Bands.
The group was also awarded Freeza Central Band of The Month last year, as well as, a youth award from Macedon Ranges Shire Council.
They have played at venues across the state alongside bands such as Children Collide, Tex Perkins and The Spazzys.
As part of their prize for Triple J Unearthed, the band now has the opportunity to perform alongside British India at their school on Thursday, June 24.
The Triple J Unearthed competition’s initiative is to support independent, self-funded secondary school-age musicians and provide opportunities to those who show potential.
Iotah will also have the opportunity to record their song, Foreign Lover, in Sydney with Triple J and will hear it played on radio station and JTV.
“We’re excited but it’ll be a little bit nerve-racking to play in front of Triple J,” Sarah said.
Opportunity knocks
Triple J Unearthed has unlocked many opportunities for the band, who hope to further their music career.
“We hope to record an EP and keep playing at a lot of gigs,” Amy said.
The band’s talent has also attracted the attention of The Cat Empire and the sisters will be supporting them at an underage gig at the Prince of Wales on August 8.
