A MIRACLE Black Saturday survivor returned home to Clonbinane this month for the first time since the town was ravaged by the February 7 fires.
The landscape had changed and the house was gone, down but to family horse Scooby Dee this is home - with his loving owner; six year-old Lauren Gobbett.
The pair were brought together again by a surprise reunion at the Gobbett family property on September 4 with special visitors from Kilmore East volunteer bushfire fencing organisation BlazeAid, who assisted with Scooby Dee’s return home.
Lauren’s parents, Jodie and Bevan Gobbett, organised the special day largely to thank BlazeAid for their assistance with fencing.
The Gobbett family lost everything on Black Saturday but survived the blaze by taking refuge in an old storage bunker.
The buried shipping container provided shelter from the flames, falling debris and radiant heat for the time the property was under threat.After spray painting the family’s contact details on Scooby Dee and opening the gate, the Gobbetts expected she would run to safety but were shocked to find her still standing by the bunker after the fire-front had passed.
"When we opened the door she was just standing there shivering," Bevan said.
"She was standing behind a post and rail … we couldn’t believe it. Jodie walked up to her and was patting her to calm her down.
"Scooby Dee had suffered burns to her chest, face, back legs and feet and had singed eyelashes and fringe.After a quick assessment by a Seymour vet, Scooby Dee was transported from the area for medical attention.
"We didn’t know how badly burnt she was until the Seymour vet checked her," Jodie said.
"We have no idea how she’s still here … it’s a miracle."Jodie said the family kept Lauren away from Scooby Dee after the fires because of the horse’s condition.
She said Suzie Walsh has been assisting with barefoot trimming every two to three weeks and it was at least two months before the horse’s feet started to properly heal.
Family friend Gaye McPadden from Glenarua has been looking after Scooby Dee while she was in recovery from the fires.
"We want to thank BlazeAid, Suzie Walsh and Gaye McPadden for their efforts to help get Scooby Dee home," Bevan said."The amount of help has been unreal and the generosity has been fantastic.
"This is the happiest we’ve seen Lauren in ages," he said.
To help welcome Scooby Dee home Lauren asked visitors to draw a picture to hang on the make-shift stable wall under a welcome banner.
Scooby Dee is now adjusting to her new paddock and the family are currently looking for a companion to help her settle into the changes.
The Gobbett family have already begun rebuilding and hope to move into their new house on the property by Christmas.
