KILMORE East residents Kevin and Rhonda Butler have been selected to appear on this year’s Wangaratta Yellow Pages and White Pages directory.
The couple embody this year’s cover theme Courageous Australian for their courage and dedication in helping the local community re-build after the events of Black Saturday.
During the Black Saturday bushfires, Kevin and Rhonda lost 3km of the boundary fence to their farm, which is crucial in containing their 1500 sheep.
Kevin put out a call for help to re-build their fence and the overwhelming response led to the establishment of BlazeAid, a not-for-profit organisation to assist all victims who require fencing on their properties.
“Re-building fences has given rural people a sense of ownership and confidence in the reconstruction of their community, even if their houses don’t remain,” Kevin said.
Kevin and more than 3000 volunteers have rebuilt 450km of fencing over 400 properties in the Black Saturday affected areas.
Kevin and Rhonda have also offered to house volunteers on their property that became a place to exchange stories and a support network for those affected by the bushfires, and Rhonda has co-ordinated more than 35,000 meals for the volunteers.
The leadership, courage and self-sacrifice Kevin and Rhonda have shown in setting up and co-ordinating Blaze Aid has earned them a Rotary International Award and Victorian Local Hero Award.
White Pages Group Manager Jane Blackley said the Courageous Australians theme was particularly relevant as many parts of Australia have experienced testing times over the past year.
“Australians are known for their compassion and willingness to put their hand up to help when it’s needed most,” Ms Blackley said.
“From the nominations received, we were amazed at the many people from all walks of life who have shown tremendous courage, either by risking their own life to save another, overcoming major challenges to inspire others or helping to ensure the wellbeing and safety of the community.
“We felt Kevin and Rhonda were great examples of what it means to be a courageous Australians and we are delighted to feature them on the cover of the Wangaratta directory,” she said.
The Wangaratta directory is distributed to Alexandra, Benalla, Myrtleford, Seymour and Wangaratta.
Distribution of Wangaratta Yellow Pages and White Pages began on Saturday and it will take approximately six weeks for the directories to be delivered to all households.
