BROADFORD Secondary College has added more awards to their list of accolades, with four awards at the 2009 Victorian Wine Show.
As part of the VCAL class, students helped teacher David Bulluss and Lab Technician Amy Zdrzalka make four wines that were entered into the College’s/School Section of the competition.
Since early in term two students have been harvesting grapes from the Pretty Sally Vineyard to make the wine. Crushing and fermentation usually takes approximately three weeks before the wine is put into oak for around 12 months.
Mr Bulless said students Angus and Jessie did most of the work at the winery and vineyard.
Angus described the processes he was in charge as adding the chemicals, racking the wine and picking and crushing the grapes.
Their hard work paid off and the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz and 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz were awarded silver medals and the 2009 Shiraz Cabernet Merlot and 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon were awarded bronze medals.
Entrants in the College’s/School Section can enter white or red table wines.
Wines are judged on colour and clarity, bouquet and palate. A maximum of 20 points can be awarded. The BSC silver medal wines scored 17 to 18.4 points and the bronze medal wines 15.5 to 16.9 points.
Mr Bulluss praised the hard work of the students as well as Amy’s dedication as the Lab Technician.
"Without Amy I think we’d have vinegar," he said.
The wine label was designed by Cheryl from the VCAL class. The winery at the school is known as the ‘Piper View’ winery after Mt Piper, which can be seen from the vineyard. The inspiration for the label came from this view.
The Victorian Wine Show was originated by group of enthusiasts under the Auspices of the Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society and is now one of the biggest wine shows in Victoria..
Investigation had shown the growth of and interest in Victorian wines and a need to support this growth. Seymour appeared ideal being located in central Victoria in respect of all wine growing areas.
In 1981 the first wine show came to fruition with Sir Rupert Hamer ED as patron and His Excellency Rear Admiral Sir Brian Murray, K.C.M.G., A.O. and Lady Murray as guests. There were 194 exhibits in the open classes and 44 in the amateur section.
