FOR many people in bushfires affected areas, short-term accommodation arrangements are coming to an end, with many now making decisions about other housing options.
The Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority says there are a range of interim temporary accommodation options that vary in cost and location available for people who lost their homes.
Medium-term housing options include rental accommodation - home and units available through private providers and the Department of Human Services (DHS).
Transportable housing on-site is available through private providers and there are temporary villages in Flowerdale, Marysville and Kinglake.
On-site accommodation, such as caravans, are available through private providers or the DHS, on-site sheds are available through private providers, and off-site caravans in caravan parks or on other private property are available through private providers or DHS.
Other housing options include lodging with family and friends or public and social housing through the DHS.
The temporary villages established at Flowerdale, Marysville and Kinglake still have capacity for those re-considering their interim accommodation options.
Case managers and hub captains are available to assist with information and any questions in relation to these housing options.
A new Donations Management System is also under way to ensure households can access a range of donations, including building supplies and store vouchers, on a needs basis.
Under this needs-based system, each item is given a points value and each household has 1000 points to use in accessing these items according to what they most need. Donations Co-ordinators are on the ground in communities administering this new system with case managers.
Households are encouraged to work closely with their Case Managers in deciding which of the donated goods and services will most benefit them.
Any bushfire affected person who was approved for or received a grant from the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund will be able to access donations under this system. These donations come on top of ongoing material aid for essential items and the full range of grants available through the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund.
People living in temporary accommodation on their property can still take up the offer of having a free portable toilet and shower installed while they wait to rebuild.Around 163 households have taken up the offer so far.
The Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority is overseeing the hire, installation and management of the amenities, which will be fully installed at no cost to property owners, other than the ongoing cost of consumables such as gas refills and water supply.
The scheme is funded by the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund and Grocon is responsible for working with property owners to install out the toilets and showers.Those interested can apply for the scheme using the same on-line and telephone register set up for the free government-funded clean up.
