MITCHELL Shire Council launched its Buy Local competition at the Wallan Chamber of Commerce dinner on Wednesday night.
Deputy Mayor Cr Kelley Stewart announced the competition, saying that it was a chance to build on 2009’s Buy Local campaign and this year’s Support Local Business campaign.
Both are attempts by the Council to direct district people to purchase goods and services locally rather than traveling to Melbourne or Bendigo.
The campaigns also aim to promote tourism and the wide range of entertainment available within the Shire.
The new Buy Local competition is in the same spirit, requiring district shoppers to display their purchasing pride via bumper bar stickers to become eligible to win.
There are four kinds of bumper stickers available, stating I love Kilmore shopping, I love Seymour Shopping as well as slogans for Wallan and Broadford.
These bumper bar stickers are now being made available from retailers and Council’s Customer Service Centres.
Ten local shoppers displaying the stickers on their vehicles will be selected for a $100 voucher redeemable from participating retailers.
There is also a grand prize of a $500 voucher up for grabs.
Cr Stewart said that the Support Local Business campaign will also make more promotions available closer to the big holiday shopping season, and she hopes that district people will take full advantage of the good and services available locally when it arrives.
“I would encourage each and every Mitchell resident to get out there and see what makes this area of Victoria unique,” said Cr Stewart.
