THE recently formed Kilmore-Wallan Bypass Community Consultation Group held its inaugural meeting last Wednesday evening.
The group is being chaired by architect John Castles, a Bylands resident.
Wednesday night’s meeting was held in the Mitchell Shire Council chambers in Broadford.
Afterwards, VicRoads Regional Director Mal Kersting said the consultation group will play a vital part in assisting VicRoads to consult widely with the communities of Kilmore and Wallan.
He said the group will consider all information that is relevant to the planning phase for the ultimate construction of a bypass by 2017.
“Our first meting was primarily about getting to know ach other and setting the scene for the journey ahead,” he explained.
“We talked broadly about the planning process and viewed different examples of bypasses in regional Victoria.
“We also covered in general terms what a bypass could look like and good design principles.
“Importantly, it was an opportunity for the community consultation group members to discuss their expectations of being part of this group.”
Mr Kersting said he wanted to thank and welcome the members of the group for their involvement in what is seen as an important transport solution of Kilmore and Wallan.
He described the group’s future contribution to both the planning discussion and community engagement as being “very important”.
“We appreciate that the community will have a keen interest in the progress and outcomes of these meetings.
“This is an important first step in planning for the bypass.”
Mr Kersting said that at the group’s next meetings, members will begin to examine the geographic area around Kilmore and Wallan to determine potential corridor options for the multi-million dollar bypass.
The new group is expected to meet at least monthly.
The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 29.
