A PLANNING study into potential Wallan-Kilmore bypass route options is well under way and could see a bypass of the two towns complete by 2017.
Minister for Roads Terry Mulder said the planning activities are focused on a broad study area between Kilmore and the Hume Freeway.
“Aerial photography of the area was recently completed to provide a three dimensional image of the landscape to help plan for potential routes,” he said.
“This will assist in detailed investigations of the project scope, along with traffic surveys which are soon to be completed in the area.”
Mr Mulder said once a selection of potential routes had been identified, VicRoads would engage the local community in consultation.
He said the government will advertise for expressions of interest from various sectors of the Wallan-Kilmore community to form a community consultative group.
The group will be independently chaired and act as an advisory body to VicRoads in the consultation process.
“Consulting the communities of Wallan and Kilmore will provide valuable input and enable local people to provide their insights into the recommended routes,” Mr Mulder said.

Mayor Graeme Coppel welcomed the news of a community consultative committee.
“It’s important to have input from council, community representatives and VicRoads if we’re all making recommendations to the government,” he said.
“This is a significant project and the government needs to consult as widely as possible.”
The Wallan-Kilmore Bypass Group has been campaigning for a bypass of the two towns for the past five years.
WKBG secretary Wendy Law said the group had spoken to Member for Seymour Cindy McLeish about how the community consultative group would be formed.
Ms Law said it was important for the advisory group to have a balanced representation of the community.
“I’m glad to see that there will be community consultation,” Ms Law said, “but I would not like to see VicRoads and council steering the committee totally. There needs to be community input.”
She said the WKBG group has concerns that “old issues” could be raised again.
“We don’t want anything coming up that has already been refuted,” she said.
“By now the community has seen and heard enough. Internal roads must not be used in Kilmore or the great uprising will happen again. They should have got the message at the link road meeting (last year).”
Member for Seymour Cindy McLeish said community consultation was vital.
“I know this is an important issue for the community, as residents have felt really short-changed in relation to roads in the past, but our government is committed to community consultation and this is the first step,” she said.

Mr Mulder said completion of the Wallan-Kilmore bypass planning process is expected to be finalised by 2013.
