"WHAT do we want …BYPASS! …When do we want it? …NOW!"
More than 250 people marched down the main street of Wallan on the weekend waving signs and chanting in unison against the proposed duplication of the Northern Highway.
Wallan Kilmore Bypass Group Secretary Wendy Law, President Brian Mawhinney, Member for McEwen Fran Bailey, Mitchell Shire Mayor Cr Bill Melbourne and central ward Councillor Ross Lee were among the speakers who addressed the crowd.
"We’re here to express our democratic right. We want duplication planning stopped and a bypass built," Mrs Law said.
In her speech to the crowd she pointed out the discrepancies in VicRoads’ traffic studies and planning information.
A study conducted by VicRoads found that the majority of the traffic travelling on the Northern Highway is local traffic, and therefore a bypass would not improve the amount of traffic using the road.
However, residents in Hidden Valley and Bylands were told that there would be sound barriers built along the duplicated Northern Highway.
"Why are these needed if it’s only local traffic using the road?" Mrs Law asked.
Mr Mawhinney spoke about the lack of planning that went into the duplication announcement, including overlooking the additional truck traffic associated with the new fresh fruit and vegetable market in Epping and the Somerton transit.
"Remember this come election time next year and vote against this bloody government," he said.
Fran Bailey MP, while arriving a little late, was ready to demand action.
"This is bad policy …what is being proposed today is not what people want," she said.
"You deserve better, you’re going to have to be strong, no one tells the story better than those that are going to be affected …you should not allow yourselves to be trampled on."
Ms Bailey told the crowd she believes they are living in state and federal electorates with bad policies that show the Government is "looking after Melbourne", using the North South Pipeline as another example.
"Many policies implemented by the government are bad, but they think the look good in Melbourne," she said.
"The Government has a 'my way or the highway' attitude … it’s absolutely undemocratic."
Mayor Cr Melbourne assured residents from Wallan and Kilmore that they had the Council’s support.
"Kilmore and Wallan need a traffic solution. That solution is a bypass, not duplication. Our Council supports you people on the bypass," he said.
While Ben Hardman, member for Seymour, was unable to attend the rally because he was at CFA training, he said he would continue to advocate for the community.
"I met with Mitchell Shire Councillors and the Minister for Roads Tim Pallas on Thursday, where the community’s views were put.
"I will continue to put the community’s views and work with people to get their concerns across to Government, but I will not raise expectations beyond what can be achieved.
"The Minister has been up front and stated that he cannot endorse the WKBG's preferred options for a bypass because the advice he has received from VicRoads is that the external bypass would not remove the majority of trucks from the towns or attract enough local traffic to remove the need for the duplication of the Northern Highway," Mr Hardman said.
