Bypass study area released

DOZENS of residents received a letter from VicRoads yesterday detailing the study area for a bypass of Kilmore and Wallan.
The letter was accompanied by a map that shows the study area, which spans from Epping-Kilmore Road, across to Wandong moving through Kilmore East and over to link up with the intersection of the Northern Highway and Broadford-Kilmore Road.
While a number of bypass routes are on the cards, the VicRoads map shows the inevitable use of the Broadford-Kilmore Road and Northern Highway junction, where the bypass will connect with the Northern Highway.
The release of the study area comes after the Bypass Community Consultation Group’s (CCG) second meeting earlier this month.
VicRoads Northern Region Director, Mal Kersting, said the study area is ‘broad’.
“Over the last few months we have been gathering information and data to allow us to identify potential route options for the bypass,” he said.
“The meeting was an opportunity to show the group some of this initial work, which is focusing on a broad study area between Kilmore and the Hume Freeway.
He said the CCG had been shown examples of a number of other bypass locations in Victoria.
“The group learnt about how the location of a bypass can influence traffic movements and connections, safely and amenably.
“Traffic measurements recorded over the past ten years gave the group an appreciation of the rapid traffic growth in and around the Wallan, Kilmore and Broadford area and why the study area to the east of Kilmore provided the best potential for locating a bypass,” Mr Kersting said.
Recent aerial video has also been used to highlight the natural features of the study area and to identify the locations that show most promise as potential route options, he said.
“The CCG has an important role in this process to help inform VicRoads about how information is best shared with the community and to help identify the best possible location that will meet the needs of Kilmore and Wallan well into the future,” Mr Kersting said.
