A WOMAN whose grandson suffered a severe asthma attack and was taken to two hospitals before being treated is calling for a resident doctor to be stationed at The Kilmore and District Hospital.
Sue Vicary, whose seven–year-old grandson lives in Wandong, also called for more ambulances in the town.
Ms Vicary’s grandson fell ill on Saturday, February 19, and was taken to The Kilmore and District Hospital where the doctor who was scheduled to be on call that evening was sick and unable to attend.
After the nurse on duty assessed the situation, the youngster was taken to The Northern Hospital by ambulance.
While Ms Vicary praised the hospital for its care said the nurse did “a great job to stabilise him” she was concerned that there was no doctor available.
Kilmore and District Hospital CEO Bart Ruyter said that the hospital has never had resident medical officers.
“We do not employ doctors in our emergency department – it is not a service which we are funded to provide,” he said.
“Some people present expecting to see a doctor but it’s often not necessary and nurses can provide the initial assessment.
“All of our nurses are appropriately trained and provide an excellent service.”
The hospital currently funds two specially trained emergency nurses available 24 hours a day seven days a week. They are supported by a “doctor on call service.”
General practitioners volunteer their time for the emergency department on call service and are available from 8am to 10pm on week-days and 10am to 11pm on weekends.
“We do have issues from time to time if a doctor is sick. There is no on-call back-up service, though we will endeavour to replace them if possible,” Mr Ruyter said.
The hospital has about 8000 patients present at its emergency department annually with only two to three presentations at the emergency department each night.
Mr Ruyter said the hospital would benefit from a resident doctor but said it is difficult to justify that level of funding.
“We would love to have full time doctors on staff, without a question, that would be wonderful. Maybe with an expansion in the size of our agency we may have justification for the funding.”
“I believe we provide the best service we possibly can under the restraints of the small rural health services model,” Mr Ruyter said.
“It’s the same for a lot of small or rural communities, though we are fortunate to at least have dedicated nurses in our emergency department.”
Mr Ruyter said the hospital has a good working relationship with the Ambulance Victoria.
He said it is often faster to get a critical patient seen to if they are taken to The Northern Hospital by ambulance – rather than waiting for a doctor from outside of the district to come to the hospital, only to make the decision to transfer the patient anyway.
“We have a good working relationship with the local ambulance drivers,” he said.
“We get the support when we need it and also have regular access to the air service.”
With major growth expected for the region within the next 10 years, Ms Vicary was also concerned that ambulance services could soon be under more pressure.
“The ambulances seem to be spending their weekend driving to The Northern Hospital,” she said.
“It’s scary for me as a grandmother.”
The Liberal National Coalition Government pledged $10 million to support the upgrade and expansion of The Kilmore and District Hospital.
The upgrade will support a 30-bed expansion of hospital services including surgical services, midwifery, chemotherapy, rehabilitation, acute medical services, outpatients and primary care facilities and consulting rooms for specialist doctors.
The government also made a commitment to build and staff a 24 hour Wallan ambulance station was made during its first term.
Member for Seymour Cindy McLeish said the coalition would keep its word.
“For more than 11 years the ambulance and health services have suffered and it will take time to repair the damage,” Ms McLeish said.
“Both the Kilmore hospital project and ambulance station at Wallan will be delivered as part of the normal budget process and timing.”
