A FEW days after the 50th anniversary of the closure of the railway line to Whittlesea, the State Government called for tenders to deliver the $650 million South Morang rail extension project that is to be completed in 2013.
"The South Morang Rail Extension is the largest ever state-funded rail project and it is critical we form a strong alliance to deliver the project which has such significant benefits for public transport users and the local community," said the Premier, John Brumby, last week.
Meanwhile, the South Morang and Mernda Rail Alliance once again called on the Government to bring forward the rail extension to Mernda.
Spokesperson Darren Peters said that they were using the anniversary of the closure of the line to Whittlesea – and the closure of the stations in South Morang, Mernda and Yan Yean – back on November 29, 1959, to ask for the Epping line to be extended to Mernda by 2014.
Mr Peters said that with the population growth forecast for the area, the line should be extended concurrently with the South Morang extension.
Currently the date set for the extension to Mernda is 2027.
"It’s ridiculous that residents have to wait another 19 years for basic infrastructure … it needs to happen now," said Mr Peters.
He said that people could not rely on Plenty and Yan Yean Roads, the only arterials out of the suburbs, to carry 40,000 people.
The railway to Mernda would be a "vital transport link" and bus services would not be enough, he said.
Buses carry fewer people and "will use an already congested road network … they are going to be more unreliable."
The State Member for Yan Yean, Danielle Green, said that while at the moment funding only allows for extending to South Morang, the design would allow for further extension in the future.
She said that with major works to remove a bottleneck at Clifton Hill complete, further work is currently "underway to increase services on the Epping and Hurstbridge lines."
"The duplication of track between Keon Park and Epping, signalling upgrades on the Hurstbridge line, extra stabling at Eltham as well as having an existing rail reserve available to extend the rail to South Morang makes this the best choice for developing sustainable infrastructure to one of Melbourne’s fastest growing populations," said Ms Green.
"While at this stage funding has only been allocated to design and construct the rail line to South Morang, the design allows for the extension of the line further in the longer term," she said. "I will continue to advocate for improvements to public transport and road infrastructure."
However, it appears not all Mernda residents think a railway extension would be a good thing.
Two residents said they would not want a rail line where they live. They pointed out that it could be safety hazard and fear an increase in train-related accidents.
