Wallan’s promised GP superclinic had become a drastically downsized health centre under latest plans for the project, according to member for McEwen Fran Bailey.
"While the Federal Government has been prepared to spend more than $12 million on promised superclinics in other areas, it is only prepared to spend $1 million for Wallan’s superclinic," Ms Bailey said.
"Two years ago, Julia Gillard promised Wallan would have a superclinic with GPs offering after-hours services, chronic disease management and a range of allied health services such as physiotherapy, dieticians and podiatry."
Ms Bailey said the latest plan, without any community consultations, would have a few allied health services and no GPs provided by Mitchell Community Health (MCH) from the Wallan multi-purpose centre.
"Wallan’s promised GP superclinic is not so super after all," Fran said.
"MCH, the shire and the Federal Government know they can’t construct, equip and staff a GP superclinic in a rapidly expanding area for $1 million.
"Wallan’s population is predicted to be 20,000 within the decade, that’s a miserly $50 a person that the Rudd Government is prepared to contribute to future health services.
"Instead of holding the Federal Government to its promise, the Shire and MCH plan to take over more of the community centre to house whatever paltry services they’ll now be promised.
"The election promise has been exposed as a dud. The plan for Mitchell Community Health to take over the community centre proves the funding is inadequate and the project will be scaled down."
Ms Bailey said the community centre was constructed with a $2 million grant from the previous Federal Government to build much-needed public meeting and activity space for the community.
"It is time for Mitchell Shire, Mitchell Community Health and the Federal Government to respect and support the Wallan community in its continued use and access to the community centre," she said.
The Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon described Ms Bailey’s views as "misguided".
"It’s disappointing that the local member is more interested in playing politics than supporting extra health services for her region," she said.
"The Member for McEwen was personally called by my office and invited to the community consultation held in Wallan; however she didn’t show up. It is a shame she is only now taking an interest in the service, and appears misguided in her views.
"A representative from the Department of Health and Ageing said the location of the clinic and anticipated start dates are being negotiated "as we speak."
