COMMUNITIES in and around Whittlesea affected by the tragic February fires will share in a further $6.4 million, announced last month, from the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund for projects identified as a rebuilding priority by local communities.
Funding has been set aside for community projects including local events, arts and cultural programs, youth leadership and upgrades to community and recreation centres under the second stage of a $56 million Appeal Fund community projects program.
The $56 million Appeal Fund community projects formed a key part of a $193 Federal and State Government Rebuilding Together plan to rebuild and reconstruct towns and communities impacted by the Black Saturday and Gippsland fires.
Rebuilding Together set out across two years the rebuilding priorities, which have been driven by local communities, to rebuild their essential town buildings and services, generate business growth and investment and to rehabilitate key local attractions central to their prosperity.
State Member for Yan Yean Danielle Green said the latest round of projects brought to 113 the total number of community projects to date that had received funding through the package.
“This funding, so generously donated by people from Victoria, Australia and across the world, will go a long way to support local people to achieve their goals of rebuilding stronger, brighter futures for their communities,” Ms Green said.
“Halls and community facilities where people came together in the aftermath of the fires have also emerged as significant priorities for local communities – this funding will make a real difference to those communities as they rebuild their lives and towns after the fires.”
The Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority (VBRRA) worked closely with the Appeal Fund to identify community-generated projects, ensuring projects were being delivered according to the priorities for those communities.
The investment includes $50,000 for the initial stages of a new Whittlesea community hall and $180, 000 for community network building throughout Whittlesea.
