IT’S Connectember and throughout September the Starlight Children’s Foundation is encouraging the community to connect with their family and friends and fundraise for young people living with a serious illness, chronic health condition or disability. 
A fundraiser for Connectember can be anything from hosting a party, a Sunday BBQ, morning tea, trivia night or even an online gathering.It’s a fun way to connect with your family, friends, work colleagues, schoolmates, sporting club or community group and raise funds for seriously ill young people.
With the community’s support, Starlight can make a difference to the lives of seriously ill children like eight-year-old Ben Mair from Broadford. Ben was diagnosed with epilepsy at just 12 weeks old and six weeks later doctors found what turned out to be a brain tumour.
Doctors operated on the tumour in 2006 when Ben suffered hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) after surgery. Ben was also later diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy.Ben’s parents Glen and Sam said the Starlight Foundation has provided much needed support for the entire family and had allowed them to better cope with Ben’s illness.
Ben’s Starlight Wish was to visit the Wet ’n’ Wild theme park in Queensland with his family, which was granted in November last year.The family were able to relax and spend time together on the Gold Coast where they visited theme parks such as Wet ’n’ Wild, Movie World and Seaworld, where Ben was invited to swim with the dolphins.
Starlight wishes offer families a break from the stress of illness and hospital treatment by allowing the family to enjoy unexpected experiences.
Ben has also been able to benefit from Starlight Escapes with his family and utilise the Starlight activity rooms when in hospital care.
Delivered both in and out of hospital, Starlight’s programs provide a positive distraction to children, their siblings and parents.
Through Starlight Escapes the Mair family have been able to have a family portrait taken, visit Australia Zoo and visit the Rialto.
"They go so far and beyond," Sam said.
"They are unreal with the things that they do … every cent goes towards helping these kids with Starlight escapes. It does make a difference.
"The Starlight Room was one of the only things that we could get Ben out if bed for after he went through surgery."
Starlight’s CEO Louise Baxter said the Starlight Foundation hope to assist seriously ill children through Connectember fundraisers.
"Starlight is aiming to raise $250,000 in much needed funds to help ease the pain, loneliness and isolation that often dominates the lives of seriously ill young people," he said.
Funds raised will support Starlight in delivering their services across Australia so more young people in need can have access to programs like Starlight Wish-granting and Starlight Escapes.People can register their fundraising event at or phone 1300 727 827.
