CONGESTED traffic, limited school parking and no school crossing are among the issues that have been plaguing Conway Street commuters since the school year began.
The newly relocated St Patrick’s Primary School has posed many traffic and safety problems and district residents are blaming poor planning.
Kilmore truck driver, Laurie Avery, has labelled the street “an absolute disgrace” and “a total confusion” since the new primary school opened.
As a parent to primary-school-age children himself, Mr Avery also expressed concern about the speed limit through the area and the lack of a school crossing.
“With no school crossing parents and children are risking their lives crossing the road as they have no other option available to them,” he said.
Mr Avery also highlighted school parking as one of the major issues.
“There is barely enough room for two cars driving side by side past each other in opposite directions.
“The CFA has to use tape to stop parents from parking in front of the fire trucks’ exit – parking is obviously a major issue.
“Mitchell Shire Council has known for many, many years that St Pat’s were one day going to move to the new site, and yet no provisions or road improvements have been made, prepared for, or done.
“Obviously safety wasn’t on their high priority list.”
A school parent, who did not wish to be identified, said she was lucky to escape a major tragedy when a child ran out onto the road from behind two parked cars recently.
“It is extremely dangerous to drive through the area when there is no crossing and children running out from behind parked cars,” she said.
“Children and parents can’t see the oncoming traffic and roads are narrowed considerably with parking on both sides.”
Access may not only prove an issue for parents attempting the morning or afternoon school-run, but also for a key emergency service sharing the same street.
Kilmore Fire Brigade captain Greg Murphy voiced concern about the increase of traffic in the area and the impact it may have on safety and brigade response time.
“People need to be mindful that if the fire brigade responds to a call there will be emergency services moving through the area,” Mr Murphy said.
“People are obviously aware that there is fairly limited space for drop-off and pick-up and we hope they will allow a little extra room for the trucks when there is an emergency that we need to get to.”
Mr Murphy said he was worried about parents parking directly in front of the fire station and blocking truck access.
He said there have already been a few instances, before the school was opened, where individuals were approached to remove their vehicles.
“It can potentially impact on our ability to respond to call-outs,” he said.
“We will continue to monitor the situation.”
Mr Murphy said that the Mitchell Shire Council will be erecting signs to deter people from parking in the station’s vicinity.
“We’re relying heavily on people and pleading with them to obey the signage so our ability to respond won’t be compromised.
“We need to make sure that people don’t park near the fire station,” he said.
St Patrick’s Primary School was unable to provide comment at the time that The North Central Review went to press but assured that the school was working with council and VicRoads to resolve the traffic issues.
