JAY-WALKERS could be slapped with a $60 fine when Kilmore police begin a crackdown this week.

Pedestrians are still taking their life in their life in their own hands by jay-walking despite the installation of the Union/Sydney Street traffic lights last month.

Kilmore’s Acting Sgt Peter Brown said pedestrians have had weeks to adjust to the new traffic signals and should now be able to use them correctly.
“A lot of people aren’t obeying the traffic signals,” he said.

“We’ve been giving people a little bit of leeway to get used to the changed road conditions.

“We’re now asking all people to cross the road at the lights and be conscious of their actions while crossing the road.”

The call for increased awareness comes after a recent spate of fatal pedestrian collisions on roads in Victoria.
In August alone, there have been six collisions resulting in the death of seven pedestrians and in five of the six recent collisions, police believe the pedestrian was at fault.
This brings the total pedestrian fatalities for the year to 34 – a 26 per cent increase on last year, with the majority of pedestrian collisions in 50km and 60km zones during daylight hours.
Road Policing Superintendent Neville Taylor said a simple decision could be the difference between life and death.
“The number of pedestrian fatalities we have seen this year is nothing short of alarming,” Supt Taylor said.
“There are laws and pedestrian signals for a reason, yet many pedestrians choose to disobey these – a decision that all too often ends in serious injuries or death.”
Supt Taylor said there are many distractions and pedestrians should keep alert.
“Too often we see people disobeying pedestrian signals, or getting distracted by mobile phones and MP3 players when crossing the road,” he said.
“The price for this behaviour is far too high and I ask that people please recognise the risks involved as a pedestrian and take responsibility around roads.
“Such a simple decision as walking against pedestrian signals, or off designated pedestrian crossings, could cost you your life.”
But Supt Taylor said it wasn’t just pedestrians who needed to take notice.
“I’m urging all motorists to slow down in busy built up areas including shopping strips, school zones and the like and take extra care,” he said.
“We all need to take action on this if we are going to turn this trend around.”

Acting Sgt Brown reminded drivers that U-turns are prohibited between Union and Bourke Streets in Kilmore from 8am to 8pm, due to high pedestrian traffic.
Police regularly run targeted operations that focus directly on pedestrian behaviour in a bid to educate vulnerable road users and reduce serious collisions and fatalities.
