OFFICIAL crime statistics show that crime in the Mitchell/Murrindindi Police Service Area has continued to decline.
Crime against property and burglary (residential) are the only two statistics that increased. With crime against the person, drug offences, other crime, robbery, assault, property damage, burglary (other), and theft from a motor vehicle all decreasing.
The most pleasing statistic showed that traffic statistics had decreased significantly.
Fatalities decreased by 26 per cent from 17 between April 2007 and March 2008 to 12.6 per cent between April 2008 and March 2009.
Serious injuries also showed a reduction over the same time period from 322.5 to 291.1, or 9.7 per cent.
Inspector Ross Smith at the Seymour Police said in addition to actively working to lower the road toll, Police will be targeting key crime areas such as assaults, property damage, deceptions and theft.
"We will continue to maintain a presence around hotels and work co-operatively with the Liquor Accord, sporting clubs, social services and local media to reduce assaults.
"Property damage in the Mitchell area has decreased on last year’s figure by 12.2 percent.
"By the community listening to our messages and being proactive, we have seen significant reductions in the thefts from and of motor vehicles," he said.
Inspector Smith said targeted patrols and local crime forums would remain in place to target property damage, and decrease instances of theft and assault.
"It is important that the community remains vigilant and notifies police in a timely manner if they have information regarding a crime," he said.
"We need to be conscious of crimes being committed, secure our property and support groups such as Neighbourhood Watch program."
This year’s crime statistics show that crime has decreased for the eighth consecutive year with a 1.7 per cent decrease in 2008/09. The overall crime rate has fallen by 25.5 percent since 2000/01.
As part of a new initiative addressing family violence Police in the Mitchell Shire will issue victims with information cards that list emergency contacts and where to get help.
There were 367 incidents of family violence reported to police in the 2007/08 financial year, an increase of 34 per cent on the year before.
Seymour Sergeant Dean Williams says the card encourages people affected by violence to get help, whether it is during an incident or after.
"It’s just to encourage self-referral and referral after an incident," he said.
"They may be able to think of things the next day, or a couple of days later, able to follow up with some of these agencies to try and engage with them, to assist them, just for better outcomes."
