MITCHELL Shire Council has been accused of making no attempts to try to salvage its Family Day Care scheme.
The council made the decision to scrap the service when it considered a report from community and recreation director Rob McVernon in the confidential section of its June 14 meeting.
Council voted to cease the program on Friday, September 23.
The news has come as huge shock to parents and educators using the service.
Kilmore mother Nikki Clydesdale has used the service for about seven years and said council never gave any indication that the program was in trouble.
“I don’t remember ever being informed that the service was in dire straits. Nobody was approached,” she said.
Ms Clydesdale said council made no effort to keep the program alive.
“If they (the Mitchell Shire Council) wanted to provide that service to the community, they would open that avenue for people to have their say.
“It seems like they just want to cut and run as soon as possible.”
She said FDC provides a unique childcare in a nurturing home environment and is an alternative to the larger, more expensive centres that some children find overwhelming.
Ms Clydesdale said families would be “hugely” affected by the decision.
“Financially, this will make a big difference to a lot of people,” she said.
About 25 private contract educators will need to make the transition from the Mitchell FDC scheme.
Educator Joanne Rowe said, like many fellow educators, she was “very disappointed” to see the service about to come to an end.
Ms Rowe has been an educator through the service for almost 17 years and is yet to sign up with a new co-ordinator.
She said she would “wait and see what happened” but said, upon asking Mr McVernon if the Mitchell service could be saved, he wasn’t optimistic.
“He said the only way to fight this is if the whole community is in an uproar but hopefully someone can save us,” she said.
Mr McVernon said council was confident child under the current programs care would not “miss out” with plenty of alternative schemes available to in the district.
“It is possible for council to withdraw from the co-ordination of family day care and ensure that a service continues in Mitchell, through a private provider of service,” he said.
“The choice of the scheme is one that needs to be made by the educators. This is not a decision that can be made by council.”
He said parents will need to confirm with their educator that a service will still be offered through an alternative co-ordinator.
Mr McVernon said council is prepared to assist families with finding a carer before October.
Scrapping the program will provide significant financial savings for council.
Mr McVernon said the loss of the program would free up funds that could be directed into other areas in the future.
FDC changes do not affect the maternal and child health services, kindergartens or occasional child care at the leisure centres in Kilmore and Seymour.
