RATHER than the standard bake sale or chocolate raffle, Kilmore International School student Gillian Lorna will shave her head to raise money for the Cambodian Kids Foundation.
Gillian said a trip to Cambodia in April showed her how people in underdeveloped countries can be stuck in poverty cycles and how the Cambodia Kids Foundation works to break them.
Kilmore International School vice captain Gillian said she wants to do something different to raise awareness for the Cambodian Kids Foundation by shaving off her long brown hair.
Gillian hopes to raise $6000 the Soksan International School in Cambodia, which will educate poverty-stricken children and help provide a pathway to a better life.
The project, affectionately known as ‘Gilly’s Special Haircut’ has been supported, by friends, family and her employers at the Kilmore Kurry Palace.
The Kurry Palace will host a special all-you-can-eat buffet lunch between 12 and 2pm for Gillian on Sunday, October 2.
Director Vjay Kumar said the meal will cost $29.90 for adults and $15 for children.
15 per cent of the profits will be given to Gillian for the Cambodian Kids Foundation and Mr Kumar said that the Kurry Palace will match the percentage dollar for dollar, giving Gillian 30 per cent of the profits.
Mr Kumar said that while the restaurant will not be making a profit from hosting the buffet they are glad to be supporting Gillian’s worthy cause and the Cambodian Kids Foundation.
“We are a local business and we are proud to support a local school and Gillian in her wonderful work,” Mr Kumar said.
Kilmore Kurry Palace manager Ratesh Thukral said the business is also happy to send the message that the restaurant is approachable for community charities and district people doing work like Gillian.
“We are here as a business to support charity and we are always there to contribute to the community,” Mr Thukral said.
Gillian is still looking for sponsors and donations to reach her goal and asks everyone who is interested in supporting her work to check out her website at <www.ckfhaircut.com>.
Bookings for the buffet lunch are preferred but walk-ins will be welcome on the day. To book call 5781 1717.
