THE Kilmore racing community will be better equipped to face the effects of the drought after a $45,000 State Government and racing industry funding partnership was announced last week.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Rob Hulls and Member for Seymour Ben Hardman visited Kilmore’s Trackside to discuss the important feasibility study into water saving and harvesting.
Mr Hulls said the entire community would benefit from the study.
"Hosting more than 50 thoroughbred and harness meetings per year, the Kilmore complex is thriving, but like so many clubs it is facing the worst drought in our state’s history," Mr Hulls said.
"The complex currently uses 35 megalitres of water each year, and this program will help ensure Kilmore is able to make the best use of the scarce water supplies available."
The study is being funded through the $86 million Regional Racing Infrastructure Fund (RRIF).
Mr Hulls said RRIF funding would be provided to investigate the viability of harvesting stormwater from buildings and racecourse structures to address the critical lack of water at the venue.
The study will also consider increasing the storage capacity of the dam at the Kilmore racecourse.
The Government is contributing $31,500 for the study through the RRIF and Racing Victoria Limited and Country Racing Victoria will jointly provide the remaining $13,500.
Mr Hardman said the drought has had a severe impact on the local community and it was important all industries examined ways to resolve water shortage issues.
"Racing is an integral part of the Kilmore community and we need to do everything to ensure it continues to host its 50 race meetings each year, free from water worries", Mr Hardman said.
RVL Chief Operating Officer Bernard Saundry said the project was a step forward in looking to reduce the pressure on precious water supplies in the area.
"The funding decision is a terrific result for Kilmore and is one of many vital projects that have arisen from the Victorian Racecourse and Training Facilities Plan released by RVL and CRV in May 2009," Mr Saundry said.
"RVL and CRV will continue to work with the Club to identify strategies to improve the ability of the venue to reduce its reliance on the potable water supply."
The State Government has committed $45 million to support major infrastructure and capital improvements at regional and rural racing and training venues, with the Victorian racing industry contributing $41 million.
