SEYMOUR residents will have access to even better emergency care thanks to a $200,000 redevelopment of the Seymour District Memorial Hospital’s emergency department.
Health Minister Daniel Andrews cut the ribbon last Friday to officially open the new facility, saying it would offer improved services for thousands of patients every year.
"The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to give Victorians an even better health system by building new hospitals and health services and hiring more doctors and nurses," Mr Andrews said.
"This $200,000 refurbishment included renovating the emergency department to separate the waiting area and the triage room, and buying new furniture to make visits more comfortable for patients and their families.
"The improved layout will also enhance clinical practice and make the emergency department a better workplace for doctors, nurses and other staff.
"More than 6000 people went to the emergency department for treatment last year, so these improvements will make a very real difference to people needing care."
Mr Andrews also announced funding of $55,000 for infrastructure upgrades at Seymour, and an extra $87,630 in acute hospital funding.
The extra money is in addition to the hospital’s annual State Budget allocation.
"The hospital will receive $55,000 through the Government’s 2009/10 Statewide Infrastructure Renewal Program to install a new plant room switchboard and replace a hot water service and compressor," Mr Andrews said.
"The renewal program supports the replacement and upgrade of critical engineering infrastructure such as boilers, chillers, electrical systems, lifts, lighting, water tanks and air conditioning.
"The program aims to extend the life of vital hospital infrastructure and enable hospitals to continue delivering safe and high quality care to patients."
Member for Seymour Ben Hardman said that local residents would welcome the new emergency department and extra funding.
