So when the recent devastation of the earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, home of Mitchell Shire’s sister city, Honbetsu, Mitchell residents banded together to raise money for victims of the disaster.
Kilmore residents Kimi Elliot and Aki Urokohara, with the support and backing of the Mitchell Honbetsu Sister City Committee, undertook fundraising activities at the April Wallan Market and Coles in Kilmore with a Japanese pancake and sausage sizzle the following Sunday.
Just under $1600 was raised and presented to the Red Cross towards the disaster relief fund.
“It was a wonderful effort from these dedicated people and well supported by the local community,” said Mike Phillips of The Sister City Committee.
The fundraising was particularly meaningful, as Honbetsu had been very supportive with fundraising following the Black Saturday events of 2009.
This year also marks a special occasion for the Sister City relationship – it is the 20th anniversary of the signing between Honbetsu and Mitchell Shire.
Prior to the disaster in Japan, plans had commenced for a delegation of representatives from Mitchell Shire to visit Honbetsu to join in anniversary celebrations in September.
While Mitchell Shire offered to defer these celebrations to allow the Japanese community time to recover, the Honbetsu Council stated that it would be a strong sign of Mitchell’s support and friendship to still attend.
The Sister City Committee is calling for expressions of interest from Mitchell residents for the trip, which will coincide with the anniversary date of September 15, and last five or six nights.
Any residents who have been part of the Sister City program over the past 20 years are especially encouraged to apply. Numbers are limited and positions are expected to fill quickly.
As Honbetsu was not adversely affected by the earthquake, nor the issues with the nuclear reactor, residents should not be concerned with travelling to the area, which is quite a distance north of Sendai.
An information night will be held on Wednesday, June 8, at 8pm, with the venue to be confirmed.
The Sister City Committee is also seeking photographs from participants of the program, either as a delegation member or homestay family, over the past 20 years for a series of framed collages to be presented to the citizens of Honbetsu during the September visit.
