INTERNATIONALLY recognised bushfire expert David Packham provided plenty of thought-provoking information and observations at a community forum on Tuesday night.
"You can keep the trees, it's what on the ground (fuel load). It will not run through the forest without fuel," Mr Packham told a gathering of about 140 people at Kilmore Trackside.
He was the keynote speaker at the forum organised by Member for McEwen, Fran Bailey -- who was highly critical of Mitchell Shire Council's approach on taking action to make roadsides safer to protect lives.
Cr Ross Lee was the other speaker, and he advocated the community "rising up" and driving policy change.
At one stage Mr Packham -- who was a top scientist with the CSIRO for many years -- said that the answer to Why don't we burn? (to reduce fuel loads) was ... "It's politics."
He was asked a number of probing questions during the evening after providing a scientific explanation of bushfires and their intensity, and explaining how precisely people can die when exposed to widespread intense fire.
"If we are not going to do something about the fuel load, we are going to get a repeat (of Black Saturday), he declared.
Mr Packham asserted that the devastating "event" where 173 lives were lost had no other cause except excessive, dangerous fuels.
He said that research has shown there was a worse day (condition-wise) in 1851, and prescribed fuel burns in Victoria were now not being carried out often or widely enough.
The guest speaker claimed that "this is the most dangerous time since humans have been on this continent" for fire risk.
He contrasted what happens in Victoria with Western Australia, where a much higher level of prescribed burns are carried out by authorities, and fires are nowhere as near extreme as in Victoria, where 600 of the 800 people who have been killed in bushfires in the past 100 years have been in this state.
