Hi there fellow garderers. Earlier this week I had the pleasure of addressing the good ladies of the Romsey Red Cross.
There was a wonderful turn-up of garden lovers, the topic chosen was 'Spring Gardening' and this is much of what I had to say.
First, I sat down to put pen to paper. Hmm, spring gardening. A huge canvas to paint on there.
It set me to thinking about Spring's past; and how very different things were then. I decided to chat about the changing face of Spring gardening and how new and challenging weather patterns are dictating the terms of future contracts with Mother Nature.
That is what gardening in the future is all about, you know. Mother Nature will continue to dictate the terms and we will fit in with her often fickle flights of fancy.
Now, more than ever, we need to take our cue from her because now, she has a co-conspirator with greater control - Old Man Weather.
It's very much a go-with-the-flow situation. Relax and learn to work within the boundaries set down for you.
Spring in the future will be very different, so let's talk about it a little more.
Let me begin by saying that almost without exception, we are all somewhat confused by the changing weather patterns and how our gardens are responding to them.
WE LIVE IN THE DRIEST CONTINENT ON EARTH
It is getting drier. Although we gardeners are generally a tough, stubborn lot, we are gradually coming to that realisation.
Rest assured, our gardens are already there, waiting for us to catch up.
When I was a child growing up in Lancefield, spring was a distinct season. It had a beginning and it had an end. It was an integral part of the tapestry of seasons.
We had long hot summers, cold wet winters, autumn rains and spring rains and all this could be depended upon except for the occasional "drought" year. Creeks ran and creeks overflowed. Water was everywhere. That was the way it was.
HOWEVER, change has been afoot for many years, slowly creeping up like a lion stalking its prey.
Climate Change/Global Warming/El Nino, however you want to put it, it is upon us. Every gardener knows this fact.
