HIDDEN Valley Golf and Country Club are continuing to support local organisations following Black Saturday, handing over a cheque for $10,000 to the Wallan CFA.
Brigade Captain Peter Roylance, Lieutenant Ken Castle and John Allsop from the CFA visited staff at the Club to show them the valuable equipment that their donation had allowed them to buy.
General Manager Diane Fisher and receptionist Kaye Fitzpatrick were thrilled that they were able to help the CFA and see the help their fundraising had provided.
"It’s the least we could do. Ultimately you guys are on the line fighting … we’re glad we could provide money for things that you weren’t going to buy anyway, but necessary extras," Diane said.
With the money the Wallan CFA purchased spotlights, hoses, nozzles, a forceful entry tool, torches, a splitting maul, LED lights to flag areas, a rescue wrench and some other items.
Wallan CFA Captain Peter Roylance said the brigade had an idea of the items they wanted, but all new equipment has to be approved by the CFA to ensure capabilities and safety, which is why it has taken some time to get all the items.
"We’re getting a new urbanised truck and a lot of the new equipment will go on that. The continued support of [the golf club] is just amazing," he said.
Lieutenant Castle said the items they purchased were more of a wish list that will enhance the brigade's firefighting in time for the coming bushfire season.
The money donated was a portion of funds that were raised at a charity golf tournament and auction held in March. A total of $50,000 was raised and the remaining $40,000 was donated to Mitchell Community Health Services local bushfire fund.
John Blackman volunteered to be the auctioneer for the afternoon, raffling off donated items including Collingwood and Hawthorn guernseys, a Mark Viduka guernsey and signed Craig Parry memorabilia.
Diane said the Club was motivated to raise money for the CFA after one of their members, Greg Jackson, lost everything. They also wanted to recognise the courageous work of the CFA.
"From Black Saturday when it all happened, had it not been from the wind the Valley would have been gone. We were all on evacuation notice as well," Diane said.
Diane said another motivation in raising the money was seeing the work of firefighters first hand. Kaye’s husband was out fighting fires with the Darraweit Guim CFA, not just on Black Saturday but in the days following the fires.
"These are all volunteers who save lives and we know how desperate they are for equipment. They do it out of the goodness of their heart."
