PARENTS at Broadford’s former ABC Learning Centre are thrilled following the announcement that the childcare centre will remain open.
The centre has narrowly beaten the closure deadline of June 30, being taken over by Tasmanian based childcare group Stepping Stones Children’s Services.
Good Following the collapse of ABC Learning Centres last year, the future of the Broadford centre remained unclear until the eleventh hour phone call from the new company on June 23 delivered the good news to centre Director Jo Chalmers.
Ms Chalmers said she was relieved and happy that the centre would remain open and is anticipating a smooth transition, with little changes to the centre. The most notable change will be the name, from ABC Learning Centre Broadford to Broadford Children's Services.
One parent who was very active in campaigning to keep the centre open, Jon Miller, said the parents are ecstatic and really rapt that someone had taken over the centre.
"A lot of the work the community and the parents' group had done helped the decision, with over 100 signatures on petition there was lots of community support and it was great to keep the issue on the radar through Cr Des Callaghan and MP Fran Bailey. Everyone helped band together and gave someone an opportunity."
Mr Miller, who has two children at the centre, said he believed having a creche in Broadford was very important for the town.
"It means the kids don’t have to move. The creche is small and they like staff there," he said.
Ms Chalmers said that while enrolments had remained the same during the period of uncertainty, some of the parents began looking around for alternative childcare centres. Following the announcement of the new owners there have been at least six new enrolments over the past two weeks.
"Parents have been telling other parents and spreading the word," she said.
A settlement date is yet to be announced but is in the process of being decided.
The future of Broadford’s ABC Learning Centre looked bleak when it was listed as one of the 241 centres that were determined ‘unviable’ when the company was taken into receivership by PPB.
Fifty-five centres closed on January 1 this year, and children and staff merged into existing centres within about a two-kilometre radius.
May 15 was the original deadline given by court-appointed receiver PPB to find new operators for the centre, but with no other full-time childcare available in the town, the centre remained open with Federal Government support until the end of June.
Taxpayers have paid $56 million to keep the centres open, with only a handful scheduled to close.
