AFTER years of frustration surrounding his efforts to improve safety around Kilmore’s equine precinct, trainer Ian Stewart finally has reason to be optimistic something will be done around the George Street/East Street area.
He is heartened that Crs Kelley Stewart and Des Callaghan met with him yesterday morning to tour the area and inspect the problems causing trainers and pedestrians safety issues.
“George Street is an absolute speedway and thoroughfare,” Mr Stewart said yesterday.
“People speed around here with nothing to stop them and they couldn’t care less about you.”
Mr Stewart and his neighbour and fellow trainer John Croxford met with Crs Stewart and Callaghan onsite so they could see firsthand the issues he is referring to.
“They are to be commended for coming down, and I know Cr (Ross) Lee would have come if he was available,” he said.
“The issue isn’t just about horses; when people speed around the corner everyone is in danger.
“John has a disabled daughter who goes to Seymour Special School and she boards the bus here (in George Street) – you just can’t have people hooning around here.”
Mr Stewart said East Street and George Street aren’t the only problem areas, and that trainers crossing Union Street from Kellys Lane face “a nightmare” every time.
Cr Callaghan said he will discuss with Mitchell Shire Council’s acting chief executive officer Peter Halton and general manager for planning and environment Ian Scholes the issues raised by the trainers.
These include a need for the road to be re-sheeted as it is extremely slippery for horses; the need for speed bumps to ensure people slow down, particularly around corners where visibility is poor; line markings on roads; and improved signage so drivers know they are entering an area where horse traffic is high.
Cr Callaghan said he will also stress to Mr Halton and Mr Scholes the importance of an onsite meeting with the trainers.
