A SHOCK announcement on Wednesday revealed that the long established O'Dwyer Horseshoes manufacturing plant in Kilmore will cease production at the end of this year. Fourteen factory employees will then be out of a job unlss they can find alternative employment.
"We have reached a point where the costs involved in local production are simply no longer sustainable ... governments have to change policies, or risk turning Australia into a quarry," stated Dan O'Dwyer (pictured), the company's managing director for Australia and New Zealand.
While production will cease at the Kilmore plant on Willowmavin Road, a directional revamp will ensure it continues to supply customers with products bearing the O'Dwyer brand, though they will now be imported.
O'Dwyer Horseshoes was formed in 1971 by master farrier Carl O'Dwyer, and from small beginnings, it grew into an international supplier of quality products for farriers, horse owners and trainers and veterinarians across Australia and the Pacific region.
In 2001, O'Dwyer Horseshoes joined the Mustad International Group, which is now the leading horseshoe nail producer worldwide.
Wednesday was a sad day all round, particularly having to tell our production workers. They are the best and most stable team we have ever had in Kilmore," Dan O'Dwyer said.
He emphasised the O'Dwyer Horseshoes brand will continue, and Kilmore will be the main distribution base for Australia and the Asia Pacific region.
"We're not closing down, we're just halting production here.
"We have made every effort to continue manufacturing in Australia, but despite these efforts, we have no option other than to discontinue production her.
"We regret that talented and dedicated employees will be leaving us over the coming months, and lament the fact that the current global economic envirobnment no longer makes production of our products economically viable in Australia."
