KILMORE’S talented young golfer Jess Pickwick is set to embark on a life-changing experience.
Jess has accepted a six month golf scholarship to Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas, and leaves tomorrow for the opportunity of a lifetime.
The 18-year-old aims to apply for a full, four-year scholarship once the American college golf season commences in August this year.
Well known by locals as a gifted young golfer, Jess is looking forward to the opportunity the trip will provide.
“It will be a real experience, living away from home which is something I have never done before. If I get to play golf later on, on tour, it will be a real advantage to know what it is like to travel and be away from home,” Jess said.
She also acknowledged the chance to expand her horizons and gain valuable competitive experience as opportunities too good to miss.
Western Texas finished fourth in the national titles last season and look strong for the new season, with Jess one of three new recruits.
With the regular college golf season in the United States commencing in August, Jess will use the six month preseason opportunity to strengthen her game and gain valuable insights into the American college system competition.
Jess’ mother, Sandra Wicking looks forward to seeing how the specific training schedule, which is part of the program, will affect Jess’ golf.
“The training can only improve her game,” Sandra said, advising Jess’ excellent game has largely been thanks to natural talent.
Jess believes she has many people to thank for helping her on the road to fulfil her dream of playing golf at a professional level.
She gratefully acknowledges the support of Broadford Secondary College, especially Paul Campbell the VCAL co-ordinator and Brian Dennis, the sports co-ordinator, who has been instrumental in helping Jess raise finds and sponsorship opportunities with brands such as Calloway, Coca Cola and Holden.
Additionally Jess thanks Kilmore Golf Club for all the support and financial assistance which has helped hone her skills through training camps and lessons.
Finally Jess would like to make special mention of Judy Maywood, the Dalhousie District Junior Co-ordinator.
Judy has been of great assistance to Jess, especially in ensuring she got to tournaments and events when Sandra was unable to take her due to work commitments.
It is an exciting time for the young local. It is also a touch sad, with Jess quick to acknowledge she will desperately miss her mother, friends and the town.
All the region’s best wishes follow Jess on her adventure, confident in the belief she will do us all proud.
