Labor caines Liberals in McEwen

LABOR’S Rob Mitchell has snatched the seat of McEwen from the Liberal Party by winning Saturday’s Federal election.
The fierce race for one of Australia’s most marginal seats ended with a bigger than expected swing of more than five per cent to the Labor Party in McEwen.
But in an act of cautiousness, Mitchell (who lost the 2007 Federal election to former Liberal member Fran Bailey by just 31 votes) played it cool, refusing to declare a win until it had become glaringly obvious that the votes were falling in his favour.
Earlier in the evening television networks were reporting a tight race for McEwen, with the recently endorsed Liberal candidate Cameron Caine lagging closely behind Mitchell’s lead.
By 8pm a slight swing to Labor became evident, with Mitchell leading Caine by more than 3000 votes an hour later.
Yesterday, and with almost 80 per cent of votes counted, Mitchell leapt to the finish, 5000 votes ahead of Caine.
Speaking at a gathering at Wallan’s Blue Denim Café on Saturday night, surrounded by family and friends, Mr Mitchell said had he was glad he had made it over the line.
“People trusted me to do a big job and now I can reward the faith they have had in me,” Mr Mitchell said.
His wife Lisa told The Review her husband would work hard for residents in McEwen.
“Although Rob lost the last election, he said he would push through the promises he had made to the people who had supported him and he was true to his word,” she said.
“He is a man you can believe in and trust that he will listen to what you say.
“Rob has worked so hard and he deserves this,” Mrs Mitchell said.
Mr Mitchell’s parents Lorraine and George were also present, with his father telling The Review “we are very proud of what Rob has achieved and we are very proud of Rob.
“Rob was never one to call a spade a shovel, he has always called a spade a spade,” he added.
Mr Mitchell said he felt his years as a shoemaker, truck driver and RACV mechanic had taught him a lot about people, their needs, and concerns.
“Now we can push ahead with Super Clinics in Wallan and South Morang, the Wandong stadium and roll out the National Broadband Network across South Morang and continue into Whittlesea,” he said.
“It is a huge honour to be working for the McEwen electorate full time and I look forward to working with my good friends (State member for Seymour) Ben Hardman and (State member for Yan Yean) Danielle Green and taking on the challenges of Federal Parliament,” Mr Mitchell said.
Meanwhile, Cameron Caine said he had tried his hardest to keep McEwen under the hold of the Liberal Party.
“I gave it my best shot,” Mr Caine said.
“I had four weeks to get into it, mentally and physically I couldn’t have done much more.
“It’s been an amazing journey, the opportunities I have had have been brilliant and the people I have met have been wonderful,” he said.
Mr Caine described the electorate of McEwen as ‘huge’, comparing it to size of Belgium, with 115,000 voters.
He also said he was not sure if he would stay on as the Liberal candidate for McEwen.
“I’m keeping my options open,” he said
“I’ve got bills to pay so I’ve made some enquires about going back to the police force,” Mr Caine said.
At the time The Review went to press Mr Mitchell had won 37,099 votes, Mr Caine 33,927, The Greens Party’s Steve Meacher sat at 9,755, Family First’s Belinda Clarkson had 2,526 and 854 votes had been recorded for Liberal Democratic Party candidate Mark Bini.
No results had been recorded for The Secular Party candidate, Robert Gordon.
