LIBERAL candidate for Seymour Mike Laker has pulled out of the race for the highly contested seat - just 25 days before the state election
Victorian Liberal Party director Tony Nutt confirmed Laker’s resignation in a brief statement to the media on Saturday, with party insiders telling a Melbourne newspaper that Laker was suffering from stress.
“Mr Mike Laker indicated to me on Saturday that he does not wish to continue his candidacy for Seymour,” Mr Nutt stated.
“Given Mr Laker's withdrawal, the Party is taking immediate steps to select a new candidate.”
Laker’s resignation comes just over a week after he admitted to MTR radio’s Steve Price and Andrew Bolt that he had discussed rumours with voters that Somali refugees would be moving into public housing in Wallan if Labor stayed in power.
Laker initially denied saying anything about the matter but later caved to Price and Bolt’s repetitive questioning, saying “It’s a topic that comes up in conversation on a regular basis.”
No public housing projects are planned for Wallan.
Bolt, a renowned journalist, later called for Laker to be sacked.
“I think the Liberal Party will have to dis-endorse Mike Laker,” he said.
“I hate the thought of people wandering around this place trying to solicit votes allegedly by claiming Somalis are being, coming into your area, watch out!
“That’s how I heard it, I don’t know whether that’s how he intended it and I think if that’s true, that’s disgraceful,” Bolt said.
The Minister for Housing, Richard Wynne, also denounced Laker’s actions, urging him to apologise to the Somali community.
But Mr Laker did not say sorry and instead released a statement later saying he had been taken out of context.
“… I was asked in a radio interview whether rumours about public housing being potentially accessed by refugees, in Wallan, had ever been raised with me,” the statement read.
“My own view, which I have held for many years, consistently and unequivocally, is that our state has been enriched by immigrants from many different countries.
“The suggestion that I have sought to manipulate these sorts of issues for partisan advantage is completely false,” Mr Laker said.
The Liberal Party has since denied pushing Laker to resign, saying the decision had been made by him.
"It is a personal decision made on personal issues, he has made that decision with his family,” Liberal leader Ted Baillieu said.
The party’s search for a new candidate continued yesterday with Member for Northern Victoria Donna Petrovich saying she expected Liberal Headquarters to announce a replacement for Laker today.
Mrs Petrovich would not name any potential candidates.
Suggestions that Kinglake policeman Cameron Caine would run for the seat were also quickly put to rest, with the former Federal candidate for McEwen telling The Review that he would not be putting his hand up.
“It’s just a rumour,” Mr Caine said.
“The timing’s not right,” he said.
The Liberal’s must endorse a new candidate for Seymour by November 11.
It is not known if Laker’s replacement will be in attendance at this Saturday’s candidate forum, which will be hosted by the Wallan Kilmore Bypass Group in the Kilmore memorial Hall at 4pm.
