IN SPITE of Mitchell Shire Council’s decision not to sign the Linking Kilmore Memorandum of Understanding, it has been confirmed that traffic lights will be installed at the corner of Sydney and Union Streets in Kilmore.

Residents have been demanding lights at the dangerous intersection for years. In 2008, The North Central Review organised a petition for the traffic lights which attracted more than 2000 signatures and had the backing of Council.

The petition was presented to Parliament by local State MP Donna Petrovich, but VicRoads consistently argued that as nobody had been killed at the intersection, the lights were not a priority and no funding was available.

However, funding for the traffic lights was included in the Linking Kilmore project, which has gone ‘back to the drawing board’ after Council voted not to sign the MoU because of public opposition to the Link Road proposal.

District MP Ben Hardman said he has spoken to VicRoads Minister Tim Pallas since the Council’s decision and can attest that the much-needed lights will be installed.

“I can confirm the lights will go ahead,” he said.

The council will contribute $250,000 to the project and the State Government will provide the majority of funding in keeping with its May 5 pledge.

Mr Hardman was unable to confirm if Mitchell Shire will retain the $36.5 million in funding to commit to other traffic projects in the unsigned MoU.

“Obviously I will work with VicRoads and council and the community to find a way forward on the projects they want … we really want to deal with Sydney Street traffic problems,” he said.
