LOCAL building products company Rapid Building Systems handed over the keys of a brand new house to a bushfire survivor in Clonbinane last week.
A little over six months after Black Saturday, Jacqui is preparing to move into her new home after losing everything in the devastating bushfires.
Rapid Building Systems’ Managing Director Peter Zwaans said he was delighted to officially be in Clonbinane to hand the keys over last Wednesday.
The new house has been built over the ruins of her old home. A new section of concrete was laid onto the existing slab in May and building started in mid-June.
"The incredible thing about this is that the planning and getting approvals took more time than it did to erect my new home," Jacqui said.
"We only starting erecting the walls on June 11 and here it is just nine weeks later and I’ll be moving in to a completely new home. I just can’t believe it.
"And it would have been sooner if not for a few weather delays," she added.
The company’s manufacturing facility is in Kilmore, and they wanted to find a way to contribute to the community that surrounds them.
"And what better way, we thought, than to offer to provide the panels and to build a Rapidwall home since it is so ideally suited to quick construction, it’s fireproof and ecologically sustainable," Mr Zwaans said.
"We were approached by a local resident, Kieran Barry, who was helping fire victims and we told Kieran, who was previously a builder, that if he found the right person we would be happy to donate the Rapidwall and to erect a home.
"Over the next few days, Kieran talked with many fire victims about building with Rapidwall and it was at one of these discussions, with a number of local residents, that Jacqui’s name was suggested.
"The company learnt of Jacqui’s plight and because a Rapidwall home is fire rated we wanted to help her to get back on her feet quickly."
Rapid Building Systems commissioned an architect who worked with Jacqui to develop the designs for her house. They provided the walls at no cost and assisted her with much of the labour and accessing other goods and services from the local community.
Mr Zwaans thanked the local suppliers who assisted with the building and Jacqui, who effectively managed the project and funded the other costs.
"This has been an amazing experience for us all," Mr Zwaans said.
"It has been wonderful working with Jacqui, she is such an inspiration to us and the rest of the community and has contributed her time, energy and money to get this project completed.
"And of course, the most pleasing thing is that Jacqui is delighted with the results."
Rapidwall is an Australian product that has received the 2009 Global Gypsum Product of the Year award for design, production, production, processing and innovation at the annual awards conference in Rio de Janeiro earlier this year.
It was also awarded a "Good Practice" award by the United Nations Habitat in New Dehli in July.
