THREE young Avenel boys decided to take on the challenge of climbing Mount Feathertop earlier this month.
Three of the four Wyllie boys, William, 10, Thomas, 8, and Samual, 6, along with their mum Amanda and nan Renee, packed up their camping gear and took off on an overnight hike.
Mount Feathertop is 1922 metres above sea level, Victoria’s second highest mountain and from most directions any climb up is difficult.
Before the family took off on their hike on the weekend of October 10 and 11 there were some fresh snowfalls and the weather bureau was predicting a fine weekend, perfect weather to see the mountain still covered in spring snow.
"We were well prepared with warm clothing, tent, sleeping bags, stove, wet weather gear, food, phone, map, compass and whistles," Renee said.
Each of the boys carried their own small backpack with their sleeping bags, clothes, scroggin and roll mat inside. Amanda and Renee carried the rest of the gear in much larger packs.
Their day began at 9am just north of Healesville at the start of the Bungalow Spur Track that leads steeply for ten and a half kilometres up to Mount Feathertop.
The first 15 minutes went well, then "mu-um my boots hurt, mu-um I’m hot, mu-um my pack is heavy," started from the boys.
Finally, six hours later after many rests, much coercing, and a little bribery, they arrived at the Federation Hut with three exhausted but very excited little boys.
"I loved the snow and the high mountains," said Samual.
The Hut, recently rebuilt after the fires, is situated on a flat, snowy, grassy ridge just below Mount Feathertop.
"No sooner had the boys dumped their packs, a renewed burst of energy kicked in and they were off playing in the snow," Renee said.
They hiked up to the base of Feathertop Peak to take in the awesome views.
"Heavy snow covered most of the north side of the mountain, the west side was particularly patchy and not wanting to end up like Tim Holding we climbed little Mount Feathertop instead," Renee said.
By 6pm the little hikers were in bed and fast asleep in their warm cosy sleeping bags.
"I did find it hard walking. I loved sleeping in the tent and making a snow man," Thomas said.
Sunday morning was bright, clear and sunny, the snow after a freezing night was hard and crunchy.
Dreading the steep hike down the Bungalow Spur with heavy packs, the hikers decided, after consultation with another hiker, to walk out along the Razor Back Ridge, a ten and a half kilometre high alpine walking track that offers the most spectacular views of all the surrounding alpine areas.
The views were awesome and I felt very emotional at the end," William said.
Many sections of the track were covered in snow, which provided great entertainment for the boys, as they sometimes sunk knee deep into the snow.
"Again after many rests, taking in the wonderful views of the surrounding snow covered mountains, a shower of hail and another six hours of walking we made it back on the Hotham Alpine Road," Renee said.
The boys’ father (Peter Reynolds) and their younger brother Nicholas, 4, were waiting to meet the adventurous family and happy that they were all back safe and sound.
"I loved it, especially being able to enjoy introducing to our grand children this magnificent part of Victoria."
The boys’ parents are very proud of their boys and of Amanda herself, as it was her first overnight mountain hike.
