AUSTRALIA Day in the City of Whittlesea was not only a celebration of identity but also an opportunity to recognise the outstanding achievements of those within the community.
CFA volunteer Walter Spezza was awarded Citizen of the Year for his outstanding contribution and courageous efforts during the February 7 bushfires.
The former Kinglake West resident worked alongside his teenage son on Black Saturday to save his own home and support the fire fighting efforts of his neighbours.
Like many within the community, Mr Spezza lost friends and property in the bushfires, but within 48 hours of the fires he became a volunteer.
Mr Spezza displayed courage and the presence of mind to save three others who were fleeing the fire on foot on that day and contacted hundreds of locals in fire affected areas to source items in need.
Mr Spezza was instrumental in setting up an informal community relief and material aid centre in Kinglake West and organised the first community meetings in Kinglake West.
His concern for the needs of teenagers resulted in the formation of the Whittlesea Well-being Group that led to trauma and grief workshops held in local communities and schools.
The Black Saturday bushfires brought out the best in many people in district.
Alex and Julie Sutherland were awarded the Spirit of Whittlesea Australia Day Award for their involvement in the community and bushfire recovery process.
The Sutherlands put their own lives and business on hold to co-ordinate a voluntary fencing service to assist in replacing burnt fencing on local properties in the aftermath of the bushfires.
The pair’s involvement included recruitment of volunteers, their training, supervision, transport, and, in some cases, accommodation and feeding.
To date, 800 volunteers have been involved and approximately 16km of fencing has been replaced with more than 74 km and 60 properties within the City of Whittlesea still to be repaired.
In addition to co-ordinating the volunteer fencing services, the couple has assisted many other local community groups including the CFA, Whittlesea Show Committee, Whittlesea Country Music Festival and Whittlesea Agricultural Society.
Emma Giacon was also recognised for volunteerism and received the Access and Inclusion Citizen of the Year for five years of service at Plenty Valley Disability Services in Mill Park.
Starting as a volunteer in the reception area she was previously involved with the Greenwood women’s program.
Demonstrating great aptitude and a willingness to take on new responsibilities her skills have developed rapidly.
Bill Soole was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year and shares a similar active involvement in the community through volunteer work.
In his enormous voluntary contributions, he puts to good use his extensive life skills including serving in the defence forces and working as a teacher.
Mr Soole is a regular volunteer at the Northern Hospital in Epping and humbly describes himself as being the “official trolley pusher”.
For two years he has worked tirelessly as Chairman of the Hawkstowe Jazz Festival Committee and the event has been tremendously successful as a result of his involvement.
Mr Soole also volunteers at a range of Council run events including the Meadowglen Fun Run and the City of Whittlesea Community Festival.
Celeste Mitsiou was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for her enormous contribution to her secondary school and local community.
The 16-year-old has been involved numerous extra-curricular school activities including four school productions and a vocal ensemble performing at local nursing homes, school graduations, college masses and the Hawkstowe Jazz Festival.
Ms Mitsiou has also lent her talents to voice-over work at the community radio station 974FM for the past seven years.
The loss of her grandfather in July 2008 saw her step in to work with the local parish priest to co-ordinate prayer books, perform as a singer at the funeral, support her grandmother and then publicly talk about her grief and loss to help others.
Whittlesea Council congratulated all recipients for their contributions to the community.
