BILL Melbourne will serve another term as Mitchell Shire Council mayor after being unanimously elected to the position by councillors at Monday night’s special meeting in Broadford.
Cr Sue Marstaeller nominated Cr Melbourne for the position, seconded by Cr Des Callaghan.
Cr Callaghan was subsequently nominated for mayor by Cr Ross Lee and seconded by Cr Robert Parker, but Cr Callaghan declined the nomination after some debate.
Cr Marstaeller praised the “cool head and expertise” of Cr Melbourne during tough times.
Despite Cr Melbourne receiving support of all councillors, however, Cr Lee said the process of electing a mayor should change.
“I’d like to flag that the vote be democratically conducted by residents,” he said.
“(We should) open up the vote to the people of the Mitchell Shire at the next election.”
Some debate ensued; and Cr Marstaeller said it was not the right forum to bring up the suggestion.
“That was the first any of us have heard that, and I don’t think it’s appropriate,” she said.
“It’s beside the point.”
Cr Lee then called a point of order and said he has raised the issue before.
Following the dispute, Central war representative Cr Kelley Stewart was elected unopposed to the position of deputy mayor after a nomination by outgoing deputy mayor, Cr Marstaeller.
Challenges ahead
In his acceptance speech, Cr Melbourne acknowledged the work of fellow councillors for their work in the past year, and said the Mitchell Shire has some “significant challenges ahead”.
Reflecting on the past 12 months, he spoke about the “massive impact” Black Saturday had on the shire, and about the highlights of the last year, including the opening of the Broadford Library and Customer Service Centre, the Wallan Transfer Station and Depot, the launch of the tourism trail, the launch of the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walkway in Seymour, and the Sustainable Communities program.
He said the employment of a new council chief executive officer will be one of the biggest decisions council has to make, and said he will work to ensure the person who fills the position is someone the community can be proud of.
