VOTERS in the highly contested McEwen electorate are set to be bombarded with promises and pledges by both major political parties over the next five weeks as campaigning begins for the August 21 Federal election.
The fight for Australia’s most marginal Federal seat is expected to be a tough one, with Labor candidate Rob Mitchell going head to head with newly-endorsed Liberal candidate, Cameron Caine.
Mr Caine, a Kinglake resident, will attempt to hold onto the seat for the Liberals after the resignation of long time sitting member, Fran Bailey.
Ms Bailey’s exit from politics comes after a total of 17 years as the Member for McEwen.
She was first voted into power at the 1990 election before losing the seat in 1993, but in 1996 she managed to win back voter support and has fiercely held onto it ever since.
McEwen remains the most marginal seat in Australia at 0.2 percent, with Ms Bailey narrowly avoiding defeat at the 2007 Federal election, beating Labor candidate Rob Mitchell by just 27 votes.
The seat encompasses a diverse area, stretching from Diamond Creek in outer suburban Melbourne, into rural Victoria north of Seymour and west over to parts of the Macedon Ranges.
Kilmore, Wallan and Broadford sit in the north west of the electorate.
Mr Mitchell acknowledged that the fight would be tough but said he believed the Labor party has what it takes to win McEwen.
"Every promise I’ve made has been delivered and that’s a promise," he said.
"No other candidate can say that everything they agreed to has been delivered."
"Locally my focus is to ensure we have a strong voice for our community, and given the diversity of McEwen, I want to make sure we can continue to build stronger communities no matter were you choose to live." Mr Mitchell said.
And neither candidate wasted time getting on the campaign trail, with Mr Mitchell meeting and greeting Whittlesea residents outside a local bank on Saturday.
Mr Caine was quick to follow suit, handing in his resignation as a police officer at the Kinglake police station on Saturday to contend with a busy campaign schedule.
Using the slogan ‘Keeping McEwen in safe hands’ Mr Caine has already managed to put together a campaign booklet with a mini biography and list of pledges to communities in the electorate.
Mr Caine said he is "seeking the support of the people of McEwen so we can work together to improve our lives in this very special part of the world.
"I'm not a ‘party machine person’, I'm just an ordinary family man with three children who's been through some extraordinary events at Kinglake and is committed to helping communities," he added.
Both candidates are expected to zone in on a number of issues in the electorate, including health services and bushfire recovery.
And while Caine and Mitchell hold the fort as the main contenders for McEwen, a number of other candidates are expected to come forward in the coming days.
