MITCHELL Shire Mayor Cr Bill Melbourne has been re-elected as Mayor for the second year in a row, and his fourth term overall.
At a special meeting of Council on Monday November 30, councillors unanimously elected him for the 2009/10 office.
Councillors elected Cr Kelley Stewart to the office of Deputy Mayor.
Speaking of the past year, Mayor Cr Melbourne highlighted some of Council’s achievements, including Council’s exceptional performance under the unexpected pressure of the bushfires, the opening of the Wallan Transfer Station and Broadford Library and Customer Service and the launch of the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walkway in Seymour.
In his acceptance speech, Mayor Cr Melbourne thanked his fellow Councillors for the confidence they had shown in him, and said that he firmly believes his experience and stability will be paramount during this term.
"I would like to thank the Councillors for their tireless work over the past 12 months and, as they know, Mitchell has a wonderful future and some significant challenges ahead."
Mayor Cr Melbourne offered to "maximise our opportunity in securing the best there is for Mitchell Shire.""I look forward to working with my fellow Councillors and the staff of the Shire to fulfil our future and meet the challenges."
Mayor Melbourne also had a message for Mitchell Shire community members.
"The employment of a new CEO will be one of the biggest decisions of this Council and I make this pledge to you as Councillors. I will give my all to the recruitment of a CEO that we and our communities can be justly proud of.
"I will keep you fully informed at every instance on this recruitment, and offer full transparency in the recruitment process, so we may maximise our opportunity in securing the best there is for Mitchell Shire."
The final Council meeting for 2009 will be on Monday December 21, where Cr Stewart will sit for the first time as Deputy Mayor.
Council will resume in 2010, with their first meeting currently scheduled for Monday January 25.
