POLICE say excessive speed is to blame for a collision at Mill Park at the weekend which claimed the lives of five young men and left a 15-year old girl in a critical condition.
The 2007 Ford XR6 was carrying six passengers home from a party in Ivanhoe at about 1.50am on Sunday morning.
The vehicle hit a median strip, spun out of control, then swerved back onto the road before hitting a tree which fell onto the car splitting the vehicle apart at the intersection of Plenty Road and Childs Road.
The crash left five dead and Elissa Ianetta, 15, from Epping trapped in the vehicle, pinned under the body of her brother, Anthony, who allegedly saved her life.
“She remembers that … he shoved her head in between his legs to try and protect her,” Elissa’s mother Rose Sutera told the Herald Sun.
“As they roared around the corner, he gripped the handle above the back seat door — he must have known what was going to happen.”
Emergency response crews freed Ms Ianetta from the vehicle and she was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious, but stable, condition.
Anthony Ianetta died at the scene.
Others killed in the crash included driver Steve Johnstone, 19, from Wallan; his half-brother Will Te-Whare, 15; Ben Hall, 19; and Matt Lister, 17, both from South Morang.
Police told The Age that under the current probationary driver restrictions, Mr Johnstone should have been carrying only one of the young passengers in his car.
Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Tim Cartwright told The Age that the driver of the Falcon sedan carrying six people from a party had lost control in perfect conditions.
Mr Cartwright estimated the vehicle was travelling at 140km/h in an 80km/h zone, when it struck the tree.
“As far as we can tell the car was doing about 140km/h – just crazy speeds,” he said at the scene.
“There are six young people on board; five of them have died instantly.
“How many times do we have to say to people: “Speed kills”?“This isn’t speed, this is just lunacy.”
The crash was described by emergency workers as they worst they had ever seen and many were visibly upset by the wreckage at the scene.

Mr Johnstone was also to face court on failing to comply with a court imposed community based order handed down to him last year, the Herald Sun reported.
