NEXT month marks the beginning of the State Government’s preparation for the next bushfire season. 700 seasonal firefighters will be put on across the state, with crews being deployed from September, a month earlier than last year.
Premier John Brumby last week launched a recruitment campaign for Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) seasonal firefighters, with 80 starting next month and increasing to 700 in the ground by the start of summer.
They will join more than 2700 firefighters from the DSE and partner agencies and more than 59,000 CFA volunteers, including 1400 new volunteers who have joined since the Black Saturday fires.
"Our Government’s top priority is to work with emergency service agencies and Victorian communities to prepare the state for the bushfire season ahead," Mr Brumby said.
"The fire season is less than 100 days away and it’s vital that we are all ready. While the extreme weather conditions of Black Saturday were unprecedented, climate change, 13 years of drought and dry forest and grass conditions mean we could see similar conditions this fire season.
"That’s why were are taking action to put in place extra resources through a record $1 billion budget, improving communications systems and tendering selectively for a national early warning system so that it’s in place ahead of the bushfire season."
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Gavin Jennings said the DSE would call for applications from August 15 until September 6.
"Every new project firefighter goes through rigorous training and each year we see many returnees who bring with them the skills and experience from the previous season," he said.
The DES has introduced a web-based e-recruitment system that was used last season and will be used again this season. Applicants can obtain information and submit their applications by visiting ww.dse.vic.gov.au/fires.

Six months on from Black Saturday, Mr Brumby said that many people are still suffering and that the day is still with many of us.
"That’s why our Government will lead a state-wide bushfire preparedness week in October which will involve a dedicated, intense whole-state-effort to increase awareness and preparedness ahead of the bushfire season," he said.
Mr Brumby said a six-month progress report released last week by the Victorian Bushfire and Reconstruction Authority showed that all 3046 properties registered for clean-up have been completed.
Three temporary villages have been set up in Kinglake, Marysville and Flowerdale, 4501 kilometres of boundary fencing has been replaced or restored, 356 case managers have been deployed in 5117 cases, 30 community recovery committees have been established, $19 million in monetary and material donations has been distributed and more than 500 building permits for houses and sheds have been approved.
