THE DREAM of many hardworking volunteers to restore Seymour’s historic bridge across the Goulburn River is much closer to reality thanks to a pledge of $250,000.
Member for Seymour Ben Hardman announced the grant last week, which will fund nearly half the cost of the $542,000 project.
"Works on the National Trust listed trestle timber bridge will be warmly welcomed by the Seymour and District Historical Society, Mitchell Shire, local businesses and the many members of the community who lobbied to restore the bridge for pedestrian use," Mr Hardman said.
"This is a fantastic project that is putting into action a long-held dream by the Seymour community to preserve this historic landmark.
"It will develop a new tourist attraction for Seymour, opening up access to the northern bank of the Goulburn River, which currently cannot be accessed from the town.
"For residents, it will build on the success of the popular fishing and walking tracks on the south of the river and create a new recreational facility next to the town.
"For business, it will mean flow-on economic benefits from increased tourism and employment."
Mitchell Shire Mayor Bill Melbourne said Council was pleased to see the project going ahead.
"Council supports the restoration of this historic timber landmark because it links more than just the banks of the Goulburn; it also links the community to its past and a simpler time."
The project involves total restoration of the nine-span bridge, plus landscaping the new picnic area on the northern bank of the river.
Project works include removal and replacement of decking; installation of new bearers to provide extra support for new decking; dismantling, de-rusting and repainting guard rails; repainting steel girders and repairing supports; new fencing to replace damaged timber railing; and landscaping on the newly opened up northern side of the river.
The timber trestle bridge was built in 1892 and was in regular use until the Hume Highway was diverted in 1967.
It remained in use for local traffic accessing the Puckapunyal Army Base until 1987 when it was closed to vehicular traffic.
The bridge was available for pedestrians until late last century when it fell into disrepair and was considered unsafe. In 2002, specialist bridge engineers were commissioned to investigate and make recommendations.
"Opening the bridge for pedestrian use will create opportunities for cultural heritage, tourism and community events, and is a critical part of a strategy to re-orient the focus of Seymour towards the Goulburn River, instead of away from it," Mr Hardman said.
