Mount Piper is an icon in the Broadford area, and with the recent wet conditions the wide diversity of plants and animals that live around this prominent local landmark are ready for a great season.
Friends of Mount Piper, with Parks Victoria, is organising a nature walk at Mount Piper on Sunday, October 24, starting at 11am.
Entry is off Jeffrey’s Lane south of Broadford.
At this time of year, many different birds will be establishing nests and the many lilies, orchids and other plants will be bursting into flower.
Everyone is welcome to join the guided walk with local experts to have a look at all this abundance. After the walk, participants will be welcome for a chat, a drink and a BYO lunch.
Friends of Mount Piper is a community group that assists Parks Victoria in managing the park.
Peter Mitchell, the convenor of the group, said that among its many activities, the group has created new walking tracks, collected rubbish and carried out monitoring of the endangered Golden Sun-moth.
“The group recently received a grant through Parks Victoria to improve the signs and information available to visitors. Over the next year, the new tracks and information will make Mount Piper an even greater place to visit,” Peter said.
The group started in 2007 following a public event looking at the bats of Mount Piper.
“We now have 30 members, but more are always welcome” said Peter.
